Our Repair Café is held on the first Saturday of every month from 10:00 to 12:30 and tends to operate on a first come first served basis.
As well as supporting the local community, the Repair Café aims to inspire people to consider repairing items themselves, saving money and reducing waste going to land fill.
Visitors can bring their broken house hold items and are encouraged to sit with a volunteer and be involved in the repair process. Although not experts, each volunteer tends to have a skill and the tools for different types of repair.
On arrival Visitors will be asked to register their item by filling in a form with their details and agreeing to the principles of the Repair Café. They can then enjoy a cup of tea or coffee as they wait for a repairer to become available.
Items commonly brought to repair cafes include toys, lamps, clothing, small items of furniture, small kitchen appliances, garden equipment, ornaments, bicycles, CD players, etc.
If any materials or components are required to repair an item then the volunteer will help the visitor understand what these are and where they can be purchased. The visitor can then buy the item and bring it back to the Repair Café for fitting.
The work carried out in the Repair Café is performed free of charge on a voluntary basis although donations are accepted to help cover the costs of running the repair café.
Visitors should be aware that:
- Your item might need expertise that the current volunteers don’t have and so we might have to turn some items away.
- You accept the fact that the repairs are being performed by unpaid volunteers and that an attempt to repair an item might not be successful.
- Volunteers making repairs offer no guarantee for the repairs carried out and are not liable if the items are damaged further or do not work properly at home.
There are an increasing number of Repair Cafes popping up around the country, and like them, we are part of the Repair Cafe International organisation.
Other Repair Cafe’s in the area include Chorley Repair Café who have helped us learn the ropes. They have a Face book page here. That Repair Café is held in Chorley on the second Saturday of every month.
